Finally! A new recording, on CD, of Tibor Serly magnificent Concertino 3x3 for piano and orchestra.
The new recording features the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, drirected by Paul Freeman, with Lynn Kao on the piano.
The peculiar title perfectly designates its construction. It is three concertinos, each in three movements. First, there's the concertino for solo piano; second, there's the concertino for orchestra; third, the two three-movement works are combined without editing, for a perfect fit.
When I heard it in Longview, Washington, back in the '70s, at the special retrospective concert for the composer, it was played in the natural order:
- Concertino for Solo Piano
- Concertino for Small Orchestra
- Concertino for Piano and Orchestra
And so it was on the Musical Heritage Society LP recording.
But in this performance, all three first movements
are played in one cut, then all three second movements
are played in the second cut, and finally all three third movements
are played in the final cut for this piece on this CD.
Odd. It's an interesting way to listen to it. But it does not seem to me the way that Tibor Serly intended.
On the bright side: the performances are fine.
The CD contains two other pieces, Six Dance Designs for Orchestra and the Concerto for Violin and Wind Symphony. The latter is the best I've heard in this genre (which also includes works by Hindemith and Weill).
Tibor Serly is an underappreciated composer.
