Before there was MySpace and its imitators, there was Orkut. I participated for a while, and still have a page up.

If you want to watch (and study) people trying to connect — often pathetically trying to connect — this is a good place. In fact, I think you learn more on Orkut than you do on MySpace.

Well, that's not quite right. The MySpace community is basically painful to spend any time in. One becomes a misanthrope pretty fast there. At least, I do.

But Orkut is often merely funny. And it has intellectual pretensions, which either helps (as sugar helps the medicine go down), or makes the whole damn exercise funnier.
